Opinion Editorial Prompt

Hello classmates! my name is Karla Barrera I come from Maryland, is a huge change but so far I am enjoying it. I was born in El Salvador I came to the United States about 8 years ago. I like to read, Network, go out with friends, and shopping. I love my family and friends I miss them very much. I am excited to be here at BYU.

So the topic I am thinking of writing for the Opinion Editorial assignment is "Eating Healthy while in College". I chose this topic because I feel like all of us college students are so busy and stressing about school work, sports, clubs, volunteer work, and jobs; that we forget how to well nourish our bodies. I think that if we could set apart an hour a week or 2 from our busy schedules we could make better eating decisions. We could cook something healthier, eat a fruit here and there, pay attention to what kind of products we pick up at the grocery store. This would not only improve our body's well being but we would also feel better and we could give our all to the school work and other activities because our bodies would feel much better. I am assuming that most college students survive on fast food or microwave food or just protein bars although those are not all bad they still don't provide our bodies with the necessary nutrients we need to stay healthy and happy. "They eat plain food and drink no wine—God gives them knowledge and wisdom beyond all others."  Daniel 1

  1. Having lived on the east coast for a pretty long time, I agree that Utah is very different.
Healthy eating is definitely a good topic. I like your idea of putting aside time to focus on healthy eating, but I don't really understand how it would work. Also, as a side note I think protein bars aren't very tasty. I like how you use the argument that eating better will positively affect every other area of college students' lives. I will admit that the vending machines are way more convenient than going out and buying or finding healthy food, so fast food and microwave food are probably a safe assumption. Overall, I think it's great.

  2. Remember your audience here! Who is going to argue against this? Although a lot of students aren't living a healthy lifestyle, they would likely still agree that it's important to eat healthy. In other words, it's a hard sell. How can you make this argument a little more arguable?

  3. Karla,
Do you live close to DC?! I love that area :) I can't believe that you were born in El Salvador...THAT'S SO COOL!
Your idea for the paper seems good, it just needs a little more evidence and support behind what you're trying to say. I think some statements about college students were a little too generalized as well....so maybe try to gear it more towards your audience. I think the idea is great though!!
