RA Reflection.

I feel like I deserve a B: 165 points, on my rhetorical analysis. I believe that in my RA I made a clear claim about what makes the article persuasive. I also feel that I was able to efficiently connect the rhetorical strategies and appeals to how they affected the audience. Even though I probably was not thorough enough on my paper to deserve an A. But I believe that my RA was well written and coherent and answered the question. Though I do need some help on my diction.
If I had another chance to write this paper I would spend more time, reading the article so I could make a clearer connection between the rhetorical tools and the impact on the audience. I would also go into more depth in my analysis especially talking about how the audience feels.
My biggest challenge in writing this paper was efficiently connecting the rhetorical tools to my audience and the impact these had on the audience. It was a little hard for me to make this connection.
My paper's greatest strength is my analysis of the rhetorical tool and the purpose of the author in using that tool in his article.

Blog post #5 Presidential debates

1) Obama uses the guilt by association fallacy. He says that because Bush who is a Republican apparently ruined the economy Romney will do the same because he is also a Republican.
2) Obama also uses pathos to give some emotional appeal to his audience by mentioning that it is his 20th anniversary with his wife. This will make the audience feel sympathy for him.
3) Romney had a structure through speech. For example: "Number 1...Number 2..." This makes the impression that he knows what he is talking about and has it well planned out. It also makes his argument easy to understand and follow.
4) Romney used rhetorical questions such as "well, why lower the rates?" Rhetorical questions allowed  him to engage his audience in his speech.
5) Romney's tone of voice was confident throughout the whole speech. This helped him make his argument sound more credible and give a sense of trust to his audience.
6) Romney also uses Ethos to build on his credibility, he says that he knows how to better the economy because he has done it before.
7) Obama and Romney both use slippery slope. They both propose to their audience that if they choose the other terrible things will happen to this country.
8) Obama's hand gestures might help his argument by helping  his audience visualize what he is trying to explain.
9) Obama does not make eye contact with Romney, when Romney is talking to him about plan for the economy. This makes Obama look weak and doubtful.
10) Romney uses analogy to make his point. Romney used the example of his five kids to compare it to Obama repeating the same thing over and over again about Romney's plan for the economy, which Romney keeps on denying is not the plan he is talking about.

Blog post #4 (Globalization Articles)

The article I read and chose to analyze was: "Buying into the green movement" by Alex Williams.
Alex Williams is a reporter for The New York Times. I was not able to find any further information on him so I am not quite sure if he might have had any underlying motivation to write this article on going green. But I think he wrote it as a response to what was going on with the Home Depot Eco Options program. His audience mostly consists of professionals who read this newspaper but also to everyday citizens that might have access to this newspaper.
The author's initial purpose is to ridicule the idea of going green by consuming more and not just that, but also consuming or buying the most expensive Eco-friendly products. Alex Williams uses sarcasm to prove his point, for example: "confronted with a box of fat-free devil's food chocolate cookies, which seem deliciously guilt-free, they consume the entire box, avoiding any fats but loading up on calories." Here he is basically mocking the idea that consuming more, even if those products are Eco-friendly will not help global warming at all. The author uses logos throughout the article. He quoted an environmental author Michael Ableman who said; "Maybe the solution is instead of buying five pairs of organic cotton jeans, buy one pair of jeans instead." It seems to be more logical and make more sense that if we want to protect our earth we need to consume less. These are some tools he uses to make his point.
I feel like this article is effective because the author sites many important sources such as the environmental author quoted above, who are very credible and are professionals on the topic and can give a true insight. Alex Williams also gives multiple examples of why consuming more will not help going green and I think this can make his audience trust what he is saying. Also because of the logos in his argument it makes sense to see  what he is saying.

Blog Post #2. Discussing Ethos, Pathos, & Logos

I analyzed Mr. Collin's Speech from "Pride and Prejudice"

Ethos:
  1. Mr. Collin's starts out by saying "I think it is a right thing for every clergyman to set the example of matrimony in his parish." - this is an example of Ethos because he is saying that due to his career he has to set an example because it is only right.
  2. "I am convinced it will add very greatly to my happiness." Mr.Collin's is talking with confidence and states that in fact if this marriage happens he knows that it will bring him great happiness so he is being confident in his speech and knows what he wants.
  3. "My dear Miss Elizabeth, my situation in life, my connection with the noble family of de Bourgh.." he is using the credibility and high social level of this family he is connected with to his favor and basically saying that because he knows them very well he is also thought of as in a very social class level and respected by society.

Pathos:
  1. "Choose a gentlewoman for my sake, and for your own, let her be an active, useful sort of person, not brought up too high."- In this sentence Mr. Collins' is telling Miss Elizabeth why he has chosen her; he believes that she has all these qualities and is complimenting her hoping that his compliments will charm  Miss Elizabeth.
  2. "I understand that young ladies often reject the addresses of the man they mean to accept, when he first applies for their favor, and therefore I shall hope, my dear cousin, to lead you to the altar before long." In here Mr.Collins' is making Elizabeth think of the emotional reaction her rejection is bringing upon him. He is expressing his feelings and hopes.
  3. "Can I speak plainer?- You are uniformly charming!" On this sentence, perhaps Mr.Collins noticed that he's plan to get Elizabeth was not working that he felt desperate to let her know how rude she was being to him by denying his proposal. So he decides to call her out.
Logos:
  1. "My dear cousin, being, as I am, to inherit all this estate after the death of your father, I could not satisfy myself without resolving to choose a wife from among his daughters." In here I think he means that it is only logical that he marries the daughter of the man who has left him all his inheritance, as means of paying back the favor.
  2. "Consider that it is by no means certain that another offer of marriage may be made to you." Mr. Collins is trying to tell her that maybe there won't be anybody else who will ask her to be married and this might be her only opportunity so she should accept it given that she might not be married if she doesn't accept Mr. Collins' offer.
  3. "I am persuaded that when sanctioned by your excellent parents...my proposals will not fail of being acceptable." So basically what Mr. Collins is saying here is that because he is such a good guy and all the social advantages he has her parents will like him and approve of him because all the positive qualities and attributes he presents.
Now I will discuss what I am putting on my Op- Ed as Ethos, Pathos, and Logos that will help me achieve the purpose of my writing.

Ethos: To make myself credible I will make a reference to a scripture and also to studies that have been done on the subject. Because of the credibility of these sources it will help me add some credibility to myself.

Pathos: I will talk about the emotional consequences of not eating healthy such as: Stress, not feeling good about yourself. Also the positive emotional consequences of eating healthy such as a gain of knowledge, good self-esteem, and a happy body and mind.

Logos: I will talk about the studies that have been done on the subject and have demonstrated that eating healthy helps you perform better in school and it keeps your body strong so you should do it because it will make you feel better.

So far this is what I have come up with.

Opinion Editorial Prompt

Hello classmates! my name is Karla Barrera I come from Maryland, is a huge change but so far I am enjoying it. I was born in El Salvador I came to the United States about 8 years ago. I like to read, Network, go out with friends, and shopping. I love my family and friends I miss them very much. I am excited to be here at BYU.

So the topic I am thinking of writing for the Opinion Editorial assignment is "Eating Healthy while in College". I chose this topic because I feel like all of us college students are so busy and stressing about school work, sports, clubs, volunteer work, and jobs; that we forget how to well nourish our bodies. I think that if we could set apart an hour a week or 2 from our busy schedules we could make better eating decisions. We could cook something healthier, eat a fruit here and there, pay attention to what kind of products we pick up at the grocery store. This would not only improve our body's well being but we would also feel better and we could give our all to the school work and other activities because our bodies would feel much better. I am assuming that most college students survive on fast food or microwave food or just protein bars although those are not all bad they still don't provide our bodies with the necessary nutrients we need to stay healthy and happy. "They eat plain food and drink no wine—God gives them knowledge and wisdom beyond all others."  Daniel 1
